Rebecca Boatman's personal work is figurative and combines clay with
found objects, metals, and fused glass. African nkisis, Cycladic figures,
and reliquaries are sources of inspiration. The nkisi, or container, is a
figure in wood with inserted nails or metal shards. It is meant to hold a
powerful spiritual force. The Kongo people believe this force can be called
upon to protect, heal, or destroy. The nails and blades connect with the
oaths taken in court where decisions are made between people. The parties
drive in metals to demonstrate their promise to abide by the decision. |
