Being a Wise Consumer of Psychology in the News

Prepare three separate 'current event' reports on psychology related research in the news.

Current events may be identified from various sources including daily newspapers, media reports, professional journals, radio, internet, and conceptually relevant personal or professional experiences.

Written Format:

  • Typed, 12 pt. Times Roman font, double spaced, one inch margins.
  • A brief (no less than one page, no more than two pages) report on each current event.
  • Type your name and course section number in the upper right hand corner of the paper.
  • Left justify your reference including the title, source and date of information (no cover sheet needed).

Your reference will serve as the heading. (This is not typical but this is what I want you to do for now).

    Written Content:

Include the following in your report:
    a) Part 1/Content -Summary of event. Provide quality original and relevant summary with key psychological and consumer aspects noted.

    b) Part 2/Connection - Provide a clear description or explanation of how
event is related to one or more specific psychological concepts, theories, research, and/or ideas from the course, textbook, and/or lectures. Demonstrate depth of thought and your understanding of the concept(s).

    c) Part 3/Commentary -Provide your extensive/critical thinking personal response/reaction/reflection to event

    Oral Report:

Two of your three reports will be shared verbally with your classmates. Be prepared to give a verbal 2 minute (average) presentation to your classmates when the call is made for "Psychology in the News" current event reports (see syllabus for due dates). Additional time may be given for comments or questions. The class may be divided into groups to hear different reports. Plan wisely!

    Submitting your work:

Turn in your shared written report after your oral presentation. Write the date presented and your initials by your typed name in the upper right hand corner of your paper! These papers will be graded and returned to you.

Some sources for current events are listed on the home page in the right hand column. The collective reports will earn up to 100 pts. Each section of the report is weighted differently so demonstrate your knowledge and critical thinking wisely!
