FUNCTION:              To plan, direct and evaluate the programs and processes of disciplines within the Communications and Humanities Division.  To provide leadership for the faculty, staff, and students in the division.  To assist the Dean in the various functions and tasks necessary to provide effective daily administration of Division policies and programs.

 

REPORTS TO:     Dean of Communications and Humanities

 

SUPERVISES:              Associate faculty, Assistant to Dean, Administrative Assistant, Division Secretary, Student Assistants, Writing Center Staff

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Essential Job Functions:

 

1)     Plan, develop, implement, maintain and evaluate the English instructional program and processes in the Communications & Humanities division. 

 

2)     Hire associate faculty for the English department, evaluate associate faculty, conduct faculty meetings/workshops, order textbooks, etc.

 

3)     Direct the Writing Center staff in scheduling, hiring and problem resolution.

 

4)     Work with all three ALC’s to update the English lab component.

 

 

5)     Work with advising, registration, Honors Institute, and the bookstore to ensure smooth registration.

 

6)     Work with the Testing Center and English faculty to coordinate the grading of CLEP essays, the updating of topics, and the reviewing of grading guidelines.

 

7)     Participate in the coordination of the Emerging Scholars Program.

 

8)     Assist in the review and analysis of the program evaluation process for the English Department and other assigned department(s).

 

9)     Work with Student Development in planning, offering, maintaining and evaluating off-campus courses in the dual credit program.

 

10) Assist in the review and analysis, utilizing Brio or other software, of data for the development and improvement of programs in the assigned disciplines.

 

11) Provide leadership in the development and implementation of the strategic plans for the assigned disciplines.  Formulate and recommend annual budget requests for the assigned disciplines and the Writing Center.  Assume responsibility for operating within the approved budget.

12) Coordinate the scheduling of the language computer lab, for foreigh language and English lab classes each semester.  Also coordinate and schedule the on-site distance orientations in the first week of each semester.

 

 

 

Marginal Functions:

 

Facilitate articulation with other institutions and agencies. Justify in writing acceptance of transferability of students’ credits.

 

When the dean is unavailable, work with coordinators of other disciplines concerning problems with associates and students.

 

Recommend purchase of capital equipment necessary for the effective implementation and maintenance of educational programs within the division.

 

Serve on search committees and actively participate on task forces.

 

Promote and encourage communication and social interaction between disciplines.

 

Plan staff development (full-time and associate faculty) activities for the English Department and other assigned department(s).

 

Provide an effective two-way channel of communication between administration and faculty/staff as well as lateral communication on behalf of the division.

 

Assist in the development, review, and proofing of the college catalog, brochures and other college publications.

In the Dean’s absence, or as necessary, assist with the administrative responsibilities for the division. Respond to letters, phone calls, visits, etc. that require immediate attention from division dean.  Provide guidance to secretary and administrative assistants regarding paper work.

 

Be available to deal with students, faculty, and staff as the need arises.

 

Contribute to the marketing of the division’s programs and services.  Plan, develop, and promote ways and means for improving instruction and instructional services.

 

Participate in the formulation of college policies and procedures, especially those which affect the instructional area. 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Demonstrated knowledge and competence in assigned disciplines.

 

Knowledge of current developments in related fields of specialization with the ability to keep current with new developments.

 

Skill to perform effectively in interpersonal situations.

 

Skill to effectively plan work activities, schedules, priorities and utilization of resources.

 

Broad educational background and experience which demonstrates abilities in                  English and another discipline, principles of teaching, and public relations.

         

Ability to demonstrate consideration of others.

 

Ability to manage time and evaluate employee or students' progress.

 

Ability to clearly and effectively present ideas in meetings and in oral   presentations.

 

Written skills to convey ideas, facts, and information effectively and accurately to students, staff, faculty and the general public.

 

Ability to meet deadlines for reports and assignments.

 

Ability to perform all essential functions of this job.

 

 

 

Education and Experience: 

 

Education:                  Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution.

 

Experience:               Four (4) years experience in combined administrative and teaching experience in higher education.
