FUNCTION:            Assist faculty in the Art labs.  Maintain and set-up Art equipment for use in classes and labs.  Provide technical support and instruction to faculty and students on the use of equipment, techniques, chemicals and supplies.  Teach one Studio or Lecture course according to the course syllabus and college policy, and commensurate with experience, background, and academic credentials. Conduct art labs.

 

REPORTS TO:       Dean of Fine Arts, through the Chair of the Art Department.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

1)         Ensure faculty and students are able to perform experiments and/or assignments properly and safely by setting-up lab supplies and equipment according to syllabus and/or instructions from the Chair.

 

2)         Assist with bronze pours throughout the year.

 

3)         Teach one studio/lecture art course per semester and assign grades in accordance with the course syllabus and college policy.  Substitute in any studio art class for which an associate faculty cannot be arranged.

 

4)         Assist in necessary maintenance of the bronze casting facility.

 

5)         Assist students in mold making and with welding techniques and/or operation of power tools.

 

6)         Maintain an adequate stock of supplies; keep an inventory of current stock, order items as requested, receive stock and supplies and properly store all items.  Maintain record of supplies used each semester to aid in determining current/future needs.

 

7)         Organize and maintain Art labs, put stock and equipment away after use; clean spills, examine safety equipment and first aid supplies to ensure proper working order.  Ensure weekly cleaning is performed.

 

8)         Assist in implementation of proper safety procedures and standards, identify and report potential safety hazards.  Dispose of solutions and materials according to department guidelines.

 

9)         Maintain equipment in laboratory; ensure that equipment is in proper working order; perform maintenance as required; refer other to Instructors and Chair.  Report equipment problems and prepare appropriate requisition for equipment repairs.  Make minor equipment repairs when possible (and reasonable).  Follow-up on completed repairs to assure equipment is operating satisfactorily.

 

10)     Keep inventory of Art equipment (location, serial numbers, CCCCD numbers, etc.) Organize and maintain Art labs, put stock and equipment away after use; clean spills, examine safety equipment and first aid supplies to ensure proper working order.

 

11)     Follow rules and standards concerning electrical and chemical hazards to ensure the safety of one's self and the students.  Perform weekly cleaning duties.

 

12)     Serve as liaison between associate faculty and full-time faculty as needed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of art history, design techniques for art exhibitions, as well as various art and craft media and styles.

 

 Ability to keep up-to-date on changes in technologies, policies and procedures to maintain current working knowledge.

 

 Ability to demonstrate, use and maintain equipment/tools in safe and correct manner.

 

Ability to Operate, maintain and give safety instruction on all wood shop equipment.

 

Ability to listen actively and demonstrate understanding.

 

 Ability to work around dust, odors/fumes, toxic waste and chemicals.

 

 Ability to regularly lift objects up to approximately 100 pounds.

 

 Ability to identify opportunities to improve present programs and/or operations.

 

 Ability to make timely decisions appropriate to the situation, circumstances, and facts at hand.

 

 Ability to follow an activity, project, or plan of action through implementation.

 

 Ability to deal in a fair and courteous manner with a variety of individuals.

 

 Ability to plan, schedule, assign, coordinate, and monitor the work of student assistants.

 

 Ability to meet deadlines for assigned reports and projects.

 

Ability and knowledge of artwork installation for exhibitions in 

gallery.

 

 Skills to effectively interact orally and in writing with various levels of the district, students, faculty, staff and the general public.

 

 

Ability to perform all the essential functions of this job.

 

 

Education and Experience

 

Education:              Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in Art.

 

Experience:             One (1) year of directly related experience.  Previous teaching or teacher-aid is desired.   Demonstrated ability to use Art (sculpture) equipment.  Interpersonal skill with the ability to communicate orally and in writing to students, staff, and faculty in a courteous and professional manner.

 

Any equivalent combination of training and experience.
