FUNCTION:              Advise new students, undecided majors, students who are changing their majors and provide general advising for all students at CCCC.   Assist Coordinator of Student Success by facilitating Advising Community initiatives and working with students participating in the SSP.

 

REPORTS TO:        Coordinator for Student Success Program (SSP)

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

1)     Serve as a resource liaison to the Advising Community Program. Develop, plan and implement an academic advising program for CCCC students to include individual, group advising and new student orientation programs as requested. Develop, plan, and implement a group advising program for Advising Community Program participants and/or undecided majors as requested by Deans and Directors.

 

2)  Work with Coordinator for Student Success in setting up tracking for       students participating in both the Advising Community Program (ACP) and the SSP.

           

            3)  Maintain database for Advising Community Program.

 

 4Liaison with deans and department chairs in program development, expansion and follow-up for respective advising communities.

 

 5) Responsible for weekly/monthly updates with division chairs and tutor coordinator for all advising communities; submitting status reports to director of advising and coordinator for SSP.

 

6)  Assist Coordinator in developing and implementing new retention/persistence initiatives (new programs for retention) in conjunction with division deans and chairs for respective advising communities.

 

7)   Assist or advise students regarding program planning, course selection, schedule changes, transferability, and course withdrawals. Provide leadership in the area of unofficial degree planning for students and in the evaluation of student's transcripts. Provide support and leadership during registration for the general student population and for International students office, as individually assigned.

 

 

8)   Participate in evening advising, providing leadership and supervision for staff.

 

 9)     Provide assistance to other academic Advisors in their job priority areas.

10)     Provide general advising information to international students as requested.

 

11)     Refer students to and accept referrals from other academic advisors, faculty, administration, and counselors. 

 

12)     Assist in developing and implementing new programs for academic advising t including work with programs such as concurrent enrollment, alternative certification (CCCCD Allen), TAA (Trade Adjustment Act), students, Networks, Promise, New Student programs and study skills classes (intervention.)

 

Marginal Job Functions:

 

May provide advising assistance as directed to students attending classes at offsite and/or other locations, such as CCCCD Allen..

 

Travel between campuses to advise students, attend workshops, seminars, meetings, etc.

 

Remain calm when faced with emotional or irate individuals.

 

Train and supervise student assistants as needed.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Skills in academic advising techniques, counseling techniques, and personnel skills, along with flexibility and resourcefulness.

 

Knowledge of current developments in related fields of specialization with the ability to keep up-to-date on changes in policies and procedures to maintain current working knowledge.

 

Ability to use good judgment and work effectively under pressure.

 

Oral and written communication skills to support effective interaction with students, faculty, staff, administrators and the general public.

 

Knowledge of time management techniques.

 

Organization skills to effectively plan work activities, schedules, priorities and utilization of resources.

 

Ability to perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques and standards with minimal supervision within the assigned time frame.

 

Ability to deal in a fair and courteous manner with a variety of individuals.

 

Ability to provide feedback, support, and encouragement to students.

 

Ability to create an atmosphere of mutual trust.

 

Ability to effectively convey ideas to others in a group or one-on-one situation.

Education and Experience:

 

Education:               Bachelor's degree (Master's desired) from a regionally accredited

                                    institution in counseling or a related field.

 

Experience:             Two (2) years of experience in student development/affairs which

                                    involves academic and career counseling.

 

OR

            Any equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

Licenses/Certificates:

Note:  Required to work evenings as assigned.  Additional hours during peak periods/registration, may include weekends.
