FUNCTION: Advise
new students, undecided majors, students who are changing their majors and
provide general advising for all students at CCCC. The Advisor will be assigned an academic division and will
provide academic advising for that discipline.
REPORTS TO: Director of Academic Advising

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions:
1)
Serve as a resource liaison to the
assigned academic division. Develop,
plan and implement an academic advising program for CCCC students to include
individual, group advising and new student orientation programs as
requested. Develop,
plan, and implement a group advising program for decided majors as requested by
Deans and Directors.
2)
Assist or advise students
regarding program planning, course selection, schedule changes,
transferability, and course withdrawals.
Provide leadership in the area of unofficial degree planning for
students and in the evaluation of student's transcripts. Provide support and leadership during
registration for the general student population and for International students office,
as individually assigned.
3)
Update Advising web page and department publications, as
needed. Assist in the development of
the “Advising Times” newsletter for faculty and staff as required. Assist the Director with updates as
needed. May be assigned responsibility
to develop, implement, and administer the web-based advising program including
program updates and changes.
4)
Participate in evening advising, providing leadership and
supervision for staff. May be assigned
to act as contact advisor for Weekend College.
5)
Refer discipline/emotional problems to Dean of Students when
necessary.
6)
Provide assistance to other academic Advisors in their job
priority areas. Interact and coordinate
with divisions other than assigned division, i.e. Library, Physical Activity
Center.
7)
Provide general advising information to international
students as requested. May also provide BCIS information to international
students as assigned and perform other functions including assistance with
documentation and applications, registering and SEVIS data input.
8)
Refer students to and accept referrals from other academic
advisors, faculty, administration, and counselors.
9)
Assist in developing and implementing new programs for
academic advising including work with programs such as concurrent enrollment,
alternative certification (CCCCD Allen), TAA (Trade Adjustment Act), students,
Networks, Promise, New Student Programs and study skills classes
(intervention.)
10) May
provide general information about current industry* trends/standards to
students.
11)
May be required to liaison with Academic Computing Services
for maintenance of computers, printers and programs utilized in advising
students.
12)
May be responsible for training of part-time and work study
students, in addition to interviewing prospective student employees.
Marginal
Job Functions:
May provide advising assistance as directed to
students attending classes at offsite and/or other locations, such as CCCCD
Allen..
Travel between campuses to advise students, attend
workshops, seminars, meetings, etc.
Remain calm when faced with emotional or irate
individuals.
Train and supervise student assistants as needed.
May be required or requested to assist students
filing for change of status and reinstatement to student status with BCIS by
maintaining compliance with BCIS regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities:
Skills in academic advising techniques, counseling
techniques, and personnel skills, along with flexibility and resourcefulness.
Knowledge of current developments in related fields
of specialization with the ability to keep up-to-date on changes in policies
and procedures to maintain current working knowledge.
Ability to use good judgment and work effectively
under pressure.
Oral and written communication skills to support
effective interaction with students, faculty, staff, administrators and the
general public.
Knowledge of time management techniques.
Organization skills to effectively plan work
activities, schedules, priorities and utilization of resources.
Ability to perform assigned responsibilities, duties,
and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques and
standards with minimal supervision within the assigned time frame.
Ability to deal in a fair and courteous manner with a
variety of individuals.
Ability to provide feedback, support, and
encouragement to students.

Education
and Experience:
Education: Bachelor's
degree (Master's desired) from a regionally accredited
institution in counseling or a related field.
Experience: Two
(2) years of experience in student development/affairs which
involves academic and career counseling.
OR
Any equivalent combination of
training and experience.
Licenses/Certificates:
N/A
Note: Required to work evenings as
assigned. Additional hours during peak
periods/registration, may include weekends.
