FUNCTION: Advise new students, undecided majors, students who
are changing their majors and provide general advising for all students at
CCCC. The Advisor will be assigned to
the International Student’s Office at SCC and the PRC Advising office to
provide academic advising within the Student Development Division.
REPORTS TO: Director of Academic Advising

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions:
1)
Assist
or advise students regarding program planning, course selection, schedule
changes, transferability and course withdrawals. Provide leadership in the area of unofficial degree planning for
students and in the evaluation of student’s transcripts.
2)
Assemble
supporting documents, interpret information, and prepare specialized letters to
resolve difficult immigration situations.
3)
Assist
in the planning of the student orientation program for CCCCD’s new
international students. Provide admission, advising, and registration support
during registration.
4)
Assist
non-immigrants in completing necessary BCIS (Bureau of Citizenship and
Immigration Services) forms/documents accurately and submit documents to the
appropriate INS, Dept. of State, etc. offices for processing. (Documents include: Change of status, Reinstatement, Off-campus
employment, Curricular Practical Training, Optional Practical Training.)
5)
Notify
both BCIS and home institution of transfer process. Serve as the Designated
School Official (DSO) with BCIS.
6)
Develop
and implement new programs for international students as needed. Assist in the
updating of the International Student Handbook.
7) Refer discipline/emotional problems to Dean of Students when
necessary. Remain calm when faced with emotional or irate individuals.
8) Perform data entry and monitoring of the SEVIS system.
9) Refer students to and accept referrals from other academic
Advisors, faculty, administration, and counselors.
10) Assist in developing and implementing new programs of
academic advising for international students, including scholarship research
and application
11) Training and supervising student assistants on a day-to-day
basis.
Marginal
Job Functions:
Assist with supervising student assistant(s).
Maintain thorough and up-to-date
knowledge of government regulations established by Federal and State agencies
relating to international students.
Travel between campuses to advise students, attend
workshops, seminars, meetings, etc.
Participate in
evening advising.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities:
Skills in academic advising techniques, counseling
techniques, and personnel skills, along with flexibility and resourcefulness.
Knowledge of current developments in related fields of
specialization with the ability to keep up-to-date on changes in policies and
procedures to maintain current working knowledge.
Ability to perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and
tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques and standards
with minimal supervision within the assigned time frame.
Ability to use good judgment and work effectively under
pressure.
Oral and written communication skills to support effective
interaction with students, faculty, staff, administrators and the general
public.
Knowledge of time management techniques.
Organization skills to effectively plan work activities,
schedules, priorities and utilization of resources.
Ability to deal in a fair and courteous manner with a
variety of individuals.
Ability to provide feedback, support, and encouragement to
students.
Ability to create an atmosphere of mutual trust.
Ability to effectively convey ideas to others in a group
or one-on-one situation.
Skill to listen actively and demonstrate understanding.

to perform all the essential functions of this job.
Education
and Experience:
Education: Bachelor's degree (Master's desired)
from a regionally accredited
institution in counseling or a related field.
Experience: Two (2)
years of experience in student development/affairs which
involves academic and career counseling.
OR
Any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
Licenses/Certificates:
N/A
Note: Required to work evenings as
assigned. Additional hours during peak
periods/registration, may include weekends.
