TITLE:                             Administrative Computer Systems Specialist

FUNCTION:                      Maintain secure and reliable administrative computer systems for the processing of the district’s mission critical data by performing systems management and systems security functions. 

 

REPORTS TO:                 Administrative Systems Administrator

 

SUPERVISES:                  N/A

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Essential Job Functions

 

1)    Perform systems management and security functions; assist in the installation, configuration, monitoring and implementation of administrative computer systems..

 

2)    Perform functions to secure the integrity of the information stored on the administrative computer systems.

 

3)    Schedule and/or perform backups of all administrative computer systems and verify off-site storage occurs as scheduled.

 

4)    Identify and perform procedures for preventive maintenance and work closely with external technical specialists to anticipate and avoid systems failure.

 

5)    Trouble-shoot administrative systems problems in a Sun Solaris, Linux or clustered OpenVMS environment.

 

6)    Develop and maintain procedures related to day-to-day systems administration, systems operations, backup and recovery routines.

 

7)    Perform scheduled and mandatory upgrades of administrative systems application and operating systems software, firmware, hardware and peripherals.

 

8)    Determine appropriate systems tools needed to perform job duties.

 

9)    Evaluate the prerequisites and make recommendations regarding upgrades to the administrative systems.

 

 

Marginal Job Functions

 

Travel between campuses to attend/participate in various workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or departmental meetings.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

 

Proficient in the use of Solaris 9i and 10g, Linux.  System administration experience preferred.

 

Working knowledge ofOpenVMS 7.1 operating systems tools and utilities, desireable.

 

Working knowledge of SunFire Mid-Range Servers, Sun Storage Solutions and Tape Library, TCP/lP protocol and system security procedures.

 

Working knowledge of AlphServer 4100 and 1200 systems desireable.

 

Skill to effectively plan work activities, schedules, priorities, and utilization of resources.

 

Ability to be on call as needed.

 

Ability to identify opportunities to improve techniques, procedures, and/or work-flow issues.

 

Ability to meet deadlines for projects, reports and other required paper work.

 

Ability to work with teams to develop and implement projects.

 

Ability to regularly sit and perform data entry.

 

Ability to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.

 

Ability to perform all the essential functions of this job.

 

 

Education and Experience

 

Education:                        Associates Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information System (CIS), Management Information System (MIS) or a directly related field from a regionally accredited institution.

 

Experience:                       Four years of computer operations or systems administration experience in a Sun Solaris, Linux or OpenVMS Alpha Server environment required. Proficient in the use of Solaris 9i, Linux or OpenVMS 7.1 or higher required.  Previous experience with SunGardHE BANNER or PLUS Suite of products desired. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with students, faculty, staff and the general public in a courteous and professional manner.
