FTP Web Help
While Collin County
Community College District does not currently offer web space for personal
web sites, it does offer space for instructional or course sites designed
for the aid of enhancing, teaching, and producing a classroom environment
via the World Wide Web. The college does not limit the amount of web
space that instructors can use; however, please
maintain your web site on a regular basis to insure that unnecessary
content, graphics, or files do not remain in your account unused. For
information on beginning web site design, go to "Page
Tutor".
Understanding and
Defining Instructional Web Site URL Addresses
For instructors, your
web address will be http://ftp.ccccd.edu/(username). If you name your
home page (the first page of your web site) as index.htm then you will
not need to specify the long URL address. For example (with index.htm
as your main page), your web site could be http://ftp.ccccd.edu/jdoe.
However, (without index.htm as your main page), you web site would
then be http://ftp.ccccd.edu/jdoe/filename.html.
Also, it is important
to always give out your web address in full form, meaning that it is
beneficial to tell your students that your web address is http://ftp.ccccd.edu/(username)
instead of ftp.ccccd.edu/(username). Always include the "http://"
in your web address to eliminate any errors that may occur when students
try to access your web site.
The first part of your
web site address, "FTP," indicates the server where your files
are located. If your web site is http://ftp.ccccd.edu
then your web account is located on the "FTP" server.
The same applies to "WebCT," "IWS," and so on.
Understanding Web
Editing Software Programs and How They Apply to CCCCD
Instructors can use any
web authoring program to design and edit their instructional
sites. However, the college
has adopted Microsoft FrontPage as the college web authoring program
and offers training and support for FrontPage.
This does not mean that you are unable to purchase a copy of Macromedia
Dreamweaver, Corel Web Designer, or Allaire Homesite to create, edit
and design your web site.
Use the software that best fits your needs. As Microsoft FrontPage is the
CCCCD adopted web authoring program for faculty and staff, the college
provides support for this product through the Help Desk.
Regardless of what web
editing software program you decide to go with, a fundamental
understanding of HTML code is very useful. There are many books
and Internet resources for learning HTML, FrontPage, and web design
techniques; however, we strongly recommend that all instructors contact
the Staff Development Office at CCCCD regarding available courses that
provide hands-on instruction, personal learning environment, ability
to ask questions to a real person, and so on. This will always be the
first recommended first step in web design at CCCCD.
Publishing Web Pages
via Microsoft FrontPage to Web Account
If you experience an
error when trying to publish your web site or page to your web account
via Microsoft FrontPage, then there are several things you will need
to check.
- Do you have "Client
for Microsoft Networks" installed on your computer in your "Networks"
configuration? To find out, click on "Start" then "Settings"
then "Control Panel" then "Networks." On the page
related to the "Configuration" tab, check to see if you
have "Client for Microsoft Networks" installed. If you do
not, then you will not be able to publish your web site or pages via
Microsoft FrontPage to your web account. In order to fix this, contact the
CCCCD Help Desk and request assistance getting "Client for
Microsoft Networks" installed on your computer.
- Are you publishing
during peak hours? Peak hours are generally between 7:00 and 8:30
in the morning, 12:00 and 1:30 in the afternoon, 4:30 and 5:30 in
the evening, and 8:00 and 12:00 in the late night. This is the time
when most people have an opportunity to log onto the Internet, construct
or edit their web site, check their e-mail, chat, check message boards,
and so on. Peak hours will slow down your ability to publish large
file sizes to your account. In fact, peak hours are known to actually
disconnect people who are logged onto the Internet due to high traffic.
So, you may want to take this into consideration and try again at
another time if a problem occurs.
- Microsoft FrontPage
is known to give permission or "80" errors occasionally.
This is a bug in the program. Keep trying and don't give up. The errors
will eventually stop and let you through to your account. This problem
exists regardless of who you are publishing to, whether a Geocities
or other Internet Service Provider web account with FrontPage Extensions
enabled.
- Did you type in your
username and password correctly, keeping in mind that the password
is case sensitive?
What is a "Web Site"?
In general, a "web site" is
a collection of multiple web pages that you maintain. A "home
page" is the first or main page of your web site or page, usually
identified as index.html, index.htm, default.html, or default.htm.
This site was designed for an 800x600
screen setting, PC, 256 colors, and 15" to 17" monitor.
